It's been an amazing 5 weeks as a social work student on attachment at Boys Town Home. and i've been wanting to blog about it but i just can't seem to pen it down... like nothing i blog will do the experience justice... that's why i've been procrastinating... argh... 1st, my partner Mili is fab. i mean really fab. she drives me to and fro and everywhere. it's a pleasure working with her. she's super nice and friendly. So much things to share. 2nd, our supervisor and senior social workers are awesome. serious. i can never ask for anyone more fab. they are wacky, entertaining, inspiring, motivated and they know so much! 3rd, the boys are a delight to work with. To those who are not sure, Boys Town Home is not a home for juvenile delinquents. The boys come from disadvantaged families. So they are just like us. they have made my attachment so fun and fuzzy...... Mili and i... we love them so much! 4th, in the short span of 3 weeks, we have been to places we've never been in my entire life... and i'm talking about the tiny island of singapore- a dot on the map.
*Qian Hu Fish Farm: lots of fishes!
*Farmart: that includes bee hive tour: did you know that a queen bee can lay 1500 eggs/day. oh & we saw the cutest labrador retriever puppies!
*Jurong Frog Farm: haha... the farm belong's to Xiaoxi's dad. she was our tourguide. so cute. she challenged our boys to catch frogs. The smaller boys were the most daring. they were so adorable. they got to bring 2 small frogs back as a parting gift.
*we're going to the Jurong water theme park tmr.
5th, the place is beautiful. we're situated on a 20 acre land. surrounded by a huge variety of trees. that includes 3 durian trees! as of now, durians are falling. Mili and Miss Adrienne brought some back today. the sunsets are stunning.
The whole experience has truly cemented my passion in working with youths. It was a unique moment when i went down with Miss adrienne to collect the boys' report books from AES. Miss Adrienne asked me if i felt a difference, having been a relief teacher there once and now going there as a "social worker." didn't really feel it until she asked,"do you feel more empowered somehow?" Funny but i did it seems. hmm.... it got me thinking... social worker? teacher?
i want to be a teacher. prob in a later stage, i'll do social work. i love social work. It is an integral part of teaching. it helps me in so many areas of teaching. call me idealistic but i want to be Robin Williams in dead poets society. I want to be Kevin Spacey's character in Pay it forward. I want to be Richard Dreyfuss in Mr Holland's Opus. I want to be Michelle Peiffer in Dangerous minds. I want to be Laura Dern in October Sky.
I want to make a difference. small it may be. little it may be but it's ok. let me sow, and God will bear the fruit in his time in his way.
thank God for blessing me with great testimonies of your faith, wonderful teachers that have left footprints on my heart, Miss Sam, Mr Koh, Mr Yeo, Mr Herd, Miss Pang, Miss Goh... and for helping me come across my latest inspiration, April. (http://walkingwithyou.blogspot.com)
& the greatest of them all --- Jesus.

There'a a very close friend of mine who had wanted to be a social worker. Ultimately, she took up a NIE course instead. I'm glad you are doing something meaningful and loving it at the same time.
Hey, that was rather touching. May this passion of yours touch many more hearts!
